This Week: Know Your Plants
Description
Plants are some of the coolest organisms on the planet. Unlike animals, they have to survive without moving. Despite not being able to move, plants are diverse and have some amazing characteristics—you don’t want to overlook them! This video is a great start for both students and teachers. It steps the viewer through ways to classify almost every flowering plant. You may have done it before, but we’re looking at monocots and dicots with a new twist.
Because monocots and dicots share common traits, there are things you can look for that will help classify them. Look at the petals, the roots, the leaf veination, the stem cross section and the seeds to help identify them. This video is intended to get you started. If you think you know the difference between monocots and dicots, you might be surprised by some of the exceptions.
Show this video to students to get them started on early plant lessons or as an introduction to classification and taxonomy.
